GREEN SCHOOL CAMPAIGN
BY:Tomás Corish 1E

Green Schools is all about raising awareness of litter in the school, and trying to get people to recycle anything that can be recycled. We are trying to find ways to keep the school litter free.
The committee meet once every two weeks, on a Thursday at lunch, usually from 1:25pm until the end of lunch. The working committee is made up of students from each of the classes in first year.
This is the first year of the Green School campaign in St. Peters College, and we are looking forward to it being a great success. However the success of the campaign will depend on everybody in the school playing their part. It is great to have a group of people willing to help keep our school litter free.
Everyone on the committee has a talent to contribute to help keep the school clean. I hope that people will try to make our job easier by recycling everything they can and by leaving no rubbish lying around the place.
There are seven steps involved in the green schools campaign. We are now well on our way with the first three steps completed. We have formed a green schools committee, with older students, parents, teachers, and management involved.
Our goal will be to get a Green Flag for the school. Doing this will not only make the school a better place, but our environment will also benefit!

NEWS LETTER January 2007
A New Year is always a good time to reflect on what we are trying to achieve. In the context of school I wish to encourage all students to focus on their work and study. Parents and teachers work together to help to create the optimum environment so that students can best achieve their goals. Here in St Peter’s College, we stress the importance of respect for self and for the rights of others to learn and the rights of teachers to teach. The environment in which we work is important and creating the right environment requires adherence to the rules, especially with regard to punctuality, wearing of the school uniform and most importantly application to study and homework.
Sincere thanks to the many teachers and students who are actively engaged in so many extra curricular activities, as is evident from reading this newsletter.
May I wish all students continued success in their studies and in the many activities that are part of college life and may I wish all parents and guardians health and happiness in 2007.
Pat Quigley – Principal
Parents are asked to note that the Board of Management cannot accept any responsibility for students who are on school grounds before 8.45am.

NEWS LETTER June 2006
I would like to take this opportunity to thank teachers, students and parents/guardians for their support and co-operation during the year. A special thanks to the members of the Board of Management, Parents’ Council and Past Pupils’ Union.
The appointment of Bishop Denis Brennan as head of the Diocese was a very special and proud moment for the College. Bishop Denis is a past pupil of St Peter’s College Secondary School and was ordained in the Pugin Chapel at St Peter’s College on 31st May, 1970. We wish him well in the years ahead.
On May 24th, 2006 Bishop Brennan celebrated the End of Year Mass for students, teachers and parents of St Peter’s College. After the Mass the annual prizegiving acknowledged the academic, sporting and cultural achievements of our students. The College, and I am sure the parents/guardians, are justifiably proud of the young men who excelled and worked hard during the year. To their teachers and mentors many thanks.
Some parents/guardians of the LC11 students will say farewell to the college for the last time in 2006. I hope you will not underestimate the enormous influence you can have on your sons. Because of the huge pressures on young people today they need to have values and guidelines. Schools and parents/guardians working together can best provide a secure and safe environment where our young people grow and flourish.
I wish our Junior & Leaving Certificate students success in their exams. I hope our Leaving Certificate students will have lives of fulfilment and happiness, where respect for themselves and others will enable them to make a positive contribution to society. May the strains of the “Boys of Wexford” ring in your ears and may St Peter’s hold a special place for you wherever you rove.
Best of Luck! - agus go n-éirí an bother libh!

NEWS LETTER JAN 2006
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our students, teachers, parents and guardians a very happy New Year. By now students will have settled into a regular pattern of study and work. This is especially important for our Leaving Certificate and Third Year students. The Senior Students will be working on their career choices and filling out the CAO Forms over the next couple of weeks. Knowing where you are going and what future direction you wish to go is one of the best ways to get the mind focussed. If any Senior student in particular is encountering difficulties it is important to discuss the matter with the Career Teacher and Subject Teacher.
Congratulations to last year’s Leaving Certificate Class and also last year’s Junior Certificate Class for achieving excellent results. The results were outstanding and matched the very best in the country. A sincere thanks to teachers, students and parents/guardians. We can all feel justifiably proud of these achievements. Welcome home to our Ski Tour team and students and well done to the teachers and students involved in the Young Scientist Exhibition.
I hope 2006 will bring peace, happiness and continued success to all our teachers, students and their families.

NEWS LETTER JUNE 2005
Another school year has come to an end and I would like to take this opportunity to thank students and parents for their work and cooperation during the year. We had a very successful End of Year Mass and Prizegiving at which I acknowledged the many outstanding academic and extra curricular achievements of the past year. Congratulations to all concerned.
Again this year the College joined Loreto Secondary School in the excellent production of ‘Godspell’. It was a show that both schools can be rightly proud of.
The Parents’ Council, in association with the teachers and students of the College and the Past Pupils’ Union, ran a very successful Race Night which raised €10,000 for the provision of audio-visual equipment for the school. The Past Pupils Union raised €1000 for musical equipment through the running of their annual Quiz Night. Many thanks. All of these activities help to build the school community and enhance the facilities for students who are the ultimate benefactors. Once again a very special word of appreciation to all our teachers for their hard work and dedication.
I wish all our Junior & Leaving Certificate classes every success in their exams. I hope that the Leaving Certificate class in particular will have a bright future and will lead happy and successful lives.
Hope that you all have a very enjoyable and safe summer.
P. Quigley – Principal

NEWS LETTER JANUARY 2005
As we begin 2005 I would like to wish all our students, teachers and parents a happy New Year. We are well into the school year and by now all students should have settled into a regular study pattern.
Following a set routine, especially for our Leaving and Third Year students, can be very beneficial. While teaching and learning is at the core of our activities we are proud of the fact that we offer a holistic education and the many co-curricular activities organised by the teachers are testimony to their commitment and dedication. This holistic approach with its multiplicity of activities helps students to grow socially, academically and spiritually – leading, we hope, to well-rounded personalities. These activities cover a wide range from games and debates to musicals. In order to facilitate these events it necessitates teachers missing some classes. Teachers are also involved in In-Services organised by the Department of Education & Science. Teachers, on occasions, are absent through illness. In such circumstances classes are taught, in many instances by Substitute Teachers, but it is not always possible to match subjects. On occasions students will have study classes, which is an essential part of their learning process.
I wish to take this opportunity to congratulate the students and teachers on their many achievements during last term especially all those involved in the Young Scientist Exhibition, Public Speaking, Games and the fantastic production of “Godspell”. If one wishes to gauge the spirit of community we need look no further than the extraordinary response to our Tsunami Appeal organised by teachers and students which raised €6000 in a couple of days and will provide two Boats for the people of Sri Lanka.
Finally, I hope we will continue the work together to create the environment where our young people can grow, develop and reach their full potential. Pat Quigley – Principal

Godspell
For five wonderful nights last term the Theatre Royal resounded to the sounds of “Godspell”. The musical, based on the Gospel according to St Matthew, was a joint production with Loreto Secondary School. It was a very difficult task to follow the marvellous “Les Miserables” of last year, yet by any standards this show was a huge success. The Theatre Royal was almost sold out on all five nights and the show was very favourably received by both audience and critics. Despite the huge costs involved in production, lighting, sound, sets, costumes and Theatre rental the show was self-financing. We would like to thank all our sponsors including the Parents’ Council and the PPU, the many people who donated spot prizes for the raffle and everybody who helped out in so many ways. In particular we are indebted to the staff and students for their support, encouragement and help.

Sri Lanka Boat Appeal
One of the responses to the tsunami disaster was the setting up of The Irish Sri Lanka Trust Fund under the patronage of John Hume. One of the aims of the Fund is to get the Sri Lankan fishing industry back on its feet as quickly as possible. A fully equipped fibreglass boat with nets and outboard motor costs €3000. The students and staff of St Peter’s decided to try to collect enough to buy a boat for a family in Sri Lanka. A fishing boat would provide for three or four families for years to come.
The Students Council and staff organised the collection and were genuinely stunned by the response. Not alone did we collect the €3000 needed for one boat, but we now have enough for two boats. This was a remarkable response. Within a few months two boats carrying the logo of St Peter’s will be sailing around the coast of Sri Lanka. Many thanks to all the students, parents and staff who helped to make this project such a success.

NEWS LETTER NOVEMBER 2004
We are well into the new academic year and I hope that all students have settled down to their work and studies. A special welcome to the First Year students. By now they will be familiar with their new environment. If any of the First Year students have experienced difficulties I invite them to contact the Principal.
Congratulations to all Junior & Leaving Certificate students on excellent exam results. A special “thank you” to their teachers for their ongoing commitment and dedication.
This summer marked the return of the Olympics to its birthplace, Athens, and it was a great source of pride to see one of our past pupils, Niall Griffin, carry the Flag for Ireland and perform with distinction in the Equestrian 3 Day Event competition.
A special welcome this year to our new teachers: Miss Catriona O’Brien, Mrs Ruth Kelly, Miss Michelle O’Neill, Mr Conor McCleane and Miss Leah Furlong.
Once again, sincere thanks to Tomás Murray who retired in June after years of dedicated service to the College. Our good wishes also go to Sharon Keyes and Brigid Dundon who have taken up teaching posts in the Marble City and the beautiful hills of Tipperary respectively.
Wishing teachers, students, parents and guardians a happy and fruitful year.

NEWS LETTER JUNE 2004
We have now come to the end of another academic year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all concerned for making it a successful one. I congratulate all those who were involved in extra curricular activities – Hurling, Football, Badminton, Handball, Athletics, Basketball. I also wish to express my appreciation to those involved with Debates, Tours, Quizzes, Outdoor Pursuits, Equestrian events etc. This year teachers brought a group of 1st & 2nd Year students on a Skiing trip to France and 4th Years and TYs on a very successful tour of France, Germany and Austria. A number of our students have also represented St Peter’s on a recent Pilgrimage to Lourdes. All these activities build up the school spirit and ethos and are essential elements of the school community in the development of young people as evidenced by the wonderful production of “Les Miserables” earlier in the year.
A special word of appreciation to the teachers. Their hard work and dedication create a vibrant school community during a difficult period in the education sector. The awards presented at our End of Year Mass and Prizegiving Ceremony on 20th May, 2004 reflect the tremendous work that has been done in the academic field and in many areas of extra curricular activities.
I wish all our Junior & Leaving Certificate Exam students every success in their exams. I hope that our Leaving Certificate students will have some good memories and will retain some of the Christian values their teachers and parents have passed on to them.
Hoping that you all have an enjoyable and safe summer.
P. Quigley – Principal

PPU Golden Jubilee
Congratulations to the St Peter’s College Past Pupils’ Union who celebrated their Golden Jubilee in April. They marked the occasion with a Dinner Dance in the Riverside Park Hotel.

Slán
We are sure that all parents would like to join with staff and students in wishing Mr Tomás Murray a long and happy retirement. He has been part of the teaching staff of St Peter’s College since 1968.
Ní bheidh a leithéad ann arís!

St Peter’s Past Pupil for Olympic Games
Congratulations to Niall Griffin, Rosslare who has been selected for the Irish 3 day Event team for the Athens Olympics. Niall is, as far as we know, the first former pupil of St Peter’s to represent Ireland in the Olympics.

Absences
Parents are reminded that under Legislation they must send in a written explanatory note (preprinted in Diary) if their son is absent.
Clocking In
Parents are asked to remind their son that is his responsibility to clock in every morning and afternoon. This is the only official record that the School and the Department have. The School has a responsibility to inform the School Welfare Officer if a student misses 20 days or more during the year.

NEWS LETTER January 2004
I heartily welcome all students particularly our First Years to the College and hope they have by now familiarised themselves with their surroundings. We do our best to create an excellent centre of learning and a place where all students will be happy. Fairness to every pupil is an important aspect of life in our community and we expect students to follow a similar ethos with regard to fellow students and teachers.

Congratulations to all of last years Leaving Cert and Junior Cert candidates on their excellent results. Well done especially to David McDonald who received an Entrance Scholarship from NUI Maynooth and to Stephen Kerr who received an Entrance Exhibition from Trinity College. The school community welcomes new teachers Mr Michael Byrne, Mrs Geraldine McCarthy, Mr Seán Rossiter and Ms Jeannette Seery. Slán to Ms Aifric Murray and Ms Máire Duffy.

Students are well into the school year by now and should be working in a planned fashion. I recommend that they study for at least two hours per night with exam classes doing substantially more. I would urge parents/guardians to use the Journal to keep in contact with the school and to check on your son’s progress. It is a valuable record that is signed by parents and tutors on a weekly basis. Encouraging and praising your son’s work can have a very positive outcome.

I hope you had a very happy Christmas and as we commence 2004 I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a healthy and peaceful New Year.

Les Miserables
Following months of hard work (and not an inspector in sight!) the joint St Peter’s / Loreto cast staged their production of Boubil and Schoenberg’s Les Miserables in the Theatre Royal in late November. Work on the production started in September, directed by Bill and Ann Marie Stafford with musical direction by Mr F Cleary and Ms M Gannon. This was the musical’s premiere for the South East of Ireland as it was the first time for permission to be given to schools in the area. The production proved to be a tremendous success and a cast of over seventy did both schools proud as they played to packed houses and standing ovations every night. Some of the stars from the Peter’s students included Shane Ffrench, Séamus McManus and Nigel Berney. We look forward to next year’s production.
TY Report
The Transition Year students have had a busy schedule since September. Early on in the year they travelled to Enniscorthy for the Enterprise Awards Scheme for Mini Companies Introduction Day. A number of mini companies are now up and running including a Student Discount Card Scheme. The class joined up with Mr Barrett’s Agricultural Science classes to visit the National Ploughing Championships in Meath also in September. Some of the class worked as ushers during the Wexford Festival Opera. They collected €800 for the Irish Wheelchair Association during their Flag Day. They also collected for ISPCC Holly Day in December. They are taking part in a GAA Coaching Skills programme that will lead to Certification and are also doing a Water Safety Course, attending the Wexford Pool every Friday morning.
The group overnighted in Glendalough for a 30km walk as part of the Gaisce Presidents Award and are also doing charity work around Wexford town as part of these awards.
In computers they have completed a number of modules of the ECDL and as part of their Art classes attended the Vermeer Exhibition in the National Gallery in Dublin. The Transition Years have also been very much involved in activities for other students and ran a very successful Golf Competition for the school pupils in Garrylough in November when over 60 took part. They also ran a Computer Games competition in school. As if life is not busy enough they are now commencing work on the school magazine Spectrum.

LC1 Ecology Field Trip
Ms Thomas’ LC1 Biology class travelled to Glendalough in Wicklow in October for a field trip. A variety of plants and animals were studied in the woodland environment there. A good day was had by all and the class even managed to spot a very rare red squirrel.

Senior Football
In the South Leinster League the team started off with a 5.7 to 0.3 loss to Knockbeg College. They beat Clane 2.12 to 0.7 and Good Counsel 1.7 to 1.6 before losing their final game to Patrician, Newbridge 0.13 to 2.6. After a number of challenge games they took on Marist College, Athlone in the first round of the championship in Stradbally in early December. Peter’s found scoring difficult and the opposition were very clinical in finishing so Peter’s lost by 5.3 to 0.6. The squad travelled to Cork for an overnight stay in early January playing a challenge game on Friday afternoon in Waterford and undergoing a very intensive training session in UCC on Saturday. A good 3.7 to 1.5 win over Good Counsel in the final of the Keevan’s Cup followed. This team, looked after by Mr Caulfield, Mr Keane, Mr O’Gara and Mr J Ryan play St Benildus, Dublin, in Power Park at 2pm on Wednesday 21st January in the losers section of the championship.

Senior Hurling
The Senior Hurlers are being looked after by Mr Lonergan, Mr Byrne, Mr Quigley and Mr Foley. They beat Castlecomer CS 4.14 to 1.4 in the first round of the League / Championship. St Kieran’s then proved too strong winning 2.10 to 2.3 but the team finished off the league in fine style beating Good Counsel 0.12 to 0.9. Second place in the group means that Kilkenny CBS will provide the opposition in the first round of the Championship on the weekend of 21/22 February.

Science Quiz Win
Six LC11 students travelled to Waterford IT in November under the guidance of Ms Dundon and Ms Thomas for the South East final of the Irish Science Teachers Association Senior Quiz. Both teams did very well with the team of Andrew Williams, James Barrett and Philip Cardiff winning and the team of Mark Berney, Conor Quinn and Martin Casey finishing in fifth place out of 39 teams from counties Waterford, Wexford, Tipperary and Kilkenny. Both teams then travelled to Trinity College Dublin where the National finals were held in late November. Competing against all the other regional winners from around the country the first team did very well and finished in sixth place after a play off out of almost seventy teams. They were only two marks behind the overall winners. The second team also performed very well and were in the top twenty.

Debating & Public Speaking
The Mental Health Public Speaking competition was held in Enniscorthy at the end of November. The team of Michael Breen and David Cox (both LC11) and Seán Bolger (LC1), deputising for Séamus McManus who was involved in Les Miserables, acquitted themselves very well. The Concern debates took place in November and December. The team of Dylan Walsh (TY), George Blackburn, Paul Breen and Conal McCarthy, all LC1, defeated Adamstown VC in St Peter’s but lost to Ramsgrange CS in Ramsgrange. Conal McCarthy and George Blackburn represented St Peter’s in the ESB Debate in TCD. They gave a superb display on the night and were most unlucky not to go through. All the teams were coached by Mr Moynihan.

School Tour & Ski Trip
Over 100 LC1 and TY students, led by Mr P Cleary, will head out to France, Germany and Austria during the first week of the Easter Holidays. At the same time, almost 40 younger students will be off skiing in France under the guidance of Mr O’Callaghan.

Education Act and Education Welfare Act
The recent passing of the above two acts have brought big changes to the education system. One of the most important changes, which affect both parents/guardians and the school, is in the whole area of school attendance. The school is obliged to monitor school attendances and absences. Every absence by a student must be accounted for by the parents/guardians of the student. Schools are now obliged by law to inform the Education Welfare Officer if a student is absent for more than 20 days in the school year.
A computerised system for monitoring attendance is now in place. All students were issued with a “Swipe Card”. Your son must take responsibility for recording his own attendance by “swiping in” every morning and afternoon. If he forgets his card, he reports to the office at break time and his attendance is manually recorded. If he does not swipe in or report to the office, then he is recorded as absent for the day on the school records.
When returning to school after an absence, parents/guardians must complete the absence slip, which is printed in the diary, and this will be collected by the Class Tutor. What does all this mean? For the school it means more expense and more work recording this information. Students now have to take responsibility and get into the habit of recording their own attendance. We ask parents to encourage and remind students to carry their Swipe Card with them. We also ask parents to complete the Absence Slip when your son is returning after an absence. Thank You.
