For some 1st Year students, settling into secondary school can be very difficult. Trying to avoid getting lost, getting used to new subjects and timetables, but more importantly, making new friends, isn't always easy. However, with the presence of a small group of senior students known as Meitheal Leaders, the transition from primary to secondary is made much easier. Becoming a Meitheal Leader requires each of the applicants to go through an interview process which is organised by the County Wexford Meitheal Alliance. From this, the students are selected and sent on a training course during the summer holidays. On returning to school in September, they are assigned their first year classes. Meitheal Leaders work extremely hard in St. Peter's College by helping to integrate their first year students into the school environment, organising event, promoting teamwork and fostering friendships. Most importantly, they interact with teachers, keeping them well-informed of any concerns first years may have. The program has been highly successful, a testimony to the hard work of the senior students involved each year. |
