Most students who have already participated in Juvenile Hurling in the college will progress to the Junior squad.
This is for the 15-16 year olds and a panel of about 30 players is selected in early September.
The emphasis is on the improvement of all the hurling skills and getting to a level of fitness that will enable the college team to compete and beat the best teams in Leinster.
The team will play at least two other teams in a preliminary round e.g. Good Counsel and Birr Community School.
Further games against St. Kierans, Kilkenny C.B.S., Castlecomer or Dublin College will be required if St. Peter’s are to be declared Leinster Champions.
Even if there is a failure to win a final inclusion on the panel of 30 is in fact a statement that you are good enough to be ranked in the 100 best hurlers in Leinster in any given year.
Isn’t that worth striving for! That’s the challenge posed for our Junior Hurlers every year.

| St. Kieran’s College Vs S.P.C in Leinster Final | ||
The Leinster Final took place at Dr. Cullen Park, where we faced a fancied St. Kieran’s College side. Conditions were ideal for hurling with Pat Kehoe of Carlow as referee. St. Peter’s were wind assisted in the first half, but it was St. Kieran’s who settled quickest and scored an early 65 from Paddy Mullen of Ballyhale. Andrew Kenny landed a long range free in the sixth minute and Kevin O’ Connor put St. Peter’s ahead a minute later with a nice point from play. Mid way through the first half, Peter’s were in front by six points to four after scores from Tomás O’ Brien, Donal Shanely and Colm Heffernan . However, Kieran’s finished the half stronger and the sides went in level at half time. Mullen pointed for Kieran’s straight after the restart, and when Gearoid Kennedy goaled in the 37th minute, The Cats were firmly in the driving seat! Peter’s battled bravely though, and points from Kenny and Ben O’ Brien kept the Wexford lads in touch. Then disaster struck – a long range free was dropping short and as it dropped from the sky the ball was flicked to the back of the Peter’s net. Seven points down, it would be easy to just throw in the towel and capitulate, but in fairness to the lads they never gave up. Andrew Kenny was moved to centre forward and soon the deficit was reduced to four points. Peter’s were back in the hunt with seven minutes left. St. Kieran’s were under intense pressure. Andrew Kenny struck a rasper of a 21 yard free which was somehow saved, and minutes later Colm Heffernan was fouled bearing down on goal. The resultant penalty was saved before Peter’s missed another glorious goal chance. It seemed luck just wasn’t on our side that day, and Kieran’s were glad to hear the final whistle. Overall, there was very little between the teams. The players were devastated after coming so close to defeating the kingpins of Leinster Hurling. Led by their captain Andrew Kenny , the Summerhill boys had given it their all. This was the fourth match in the space of a week for some of our players, which certainly didn’t help. Devastating as it was on the day, the lads can be very proud of their performances throughout the campaign. They were a magnificant group of lads to be involved with, and many of them have bright sporting careers ahead of them. They will have gained experience of hurling against the best young hurlers in Leinster, and I’m sure they will be a formidable side next year as seniors. Ná déan dearmad, beidh lá eile ag an bPaorach. TEAM: Luke White, Cormac O’ Rourke, Seán Doyle, Pádraig Foley, Murt Joyce, Andrew Kenny, James Cash, Donal Shanely, Ben O’ Brien, Kevin O’ Connor, Andrew Butler, Colm Heffernan, Bill Eviston, Colm Devereux, Tomás O’ Brien. | Good Counsel College Vs S.P.C.
The semi-final date was confirmed for 14-10-10 . St. Peter’s faced Good Counsel College at St. Patrick’s Park with Dickie Murphy as referee. Games between these two sides are always enthralling encounters and there is undoubtedly an intense rivalry on the pitch. After beating Good Counsel in the Leinster Final two years previously, this would surely be an intriguing contest. On a scoreline of 1-18 to 2-6 , St. Peter’s continued their unbeaten run, and now qualified for the Leinster Final where it was hoped that we could reclaim The Fr. Cosgrave Cup. Donal Shanely and Andrew Kenny were outstanding while Kevin O’ Connor and Colm Heffernan were magnificant in the forwards. TEAM:Luke White, Cormac O’ Rourke, Seán Doyle, Pádraig Foley, Murt Joyce, Andrew Kenny, James Cash, Donal Shanely, Ben O’ Brien, Kevin O’ Connor, Andrew Butler, Bill Eviston, Colm Heffernan, Colm Devereux, Tomás O’ Brien. | Kilkenny CBS Vs S.P.C.
Confidence was now high and the challenge was now to focus the players on the next game. Many of the lads involved on the panel were also playing club games and in such situations there is also a fear that players would be exhausted. Facing Kilkenny CBS next, we were in no doubt that it would be a difficult game. However St. Peter’s were again victorious on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-9. The scoreline probably flatters St. Peter’s but any win over The Cats is a good one! Andrew Kenny drove a 21 yard free to the net in the opening quarter, but Kilkenny fought back and actually went ahead. At half time the sides were level at 1-4 to 0-7. The introduction of Tom Dixon put a bit of strength into the forward line and he got a fine goal to put The Summerhill lads on the winning trail. TEAM:Luke White, Cormac O’ Rourke, Seán Doyle, Pádraig Foley, Murt Joyce, Andrew Butler, James Cash, Conor Devereux, Ben O’ Brien, Tomás O’ Brien, Andrew Kenny, Colm Heffernan, Kevin O’ Connor, Bill Eviston, Donal Shanely, Subs: Tom Dixon for K. O’ Connor Adrian Ryan for C. Devereux |

| Birr C.S. Vs S.P.C. | ||
St. Peter’s had to travel to Birr, Co. Kilkenny for the second round against Birr C.S. Again we were victorious on a scoreline of 3-22 to 0-8. Indeed the scoreline doesn’t reflect how tough this game actually was. Birr had many fine hurlers on their team but we seemed to get the scores when it mattered. Andrew Kenny blasted the ball to the net from a close in free on the stroke of halftime, which seemed to demoralise the Birr Players. In fairness to Peter’s, they never eased up throughout the second half, a sign that there was great competition for places for the next day. TEAM:Luke White, Cormac O’ Rourke, Seán Doyle, Pádraig Foley, Bill Eviston, Andrew Butler, James Cash, Conor Devereux, Ben O’ Brien, Tomás O’ Brien ,Andrew Kenny,Colm Heffernan,Kevin O’ Connor, Murt Joyce, Donal Shanely Subs: Adrian Ryan for M. | Junior Hurling update
Preparations with the Junior Hurlers began back in September and after a challenge game against Good Counsel, a strong panel was chosen. As the club championship was in full swing at this time of the year, the players were very fit and didn’t require much intense physical training. Instead the team mentors put an emphasis on hurling and improving the players’ skills. Training sessions mainly took place at lunchtime, against the hurling wall, on the grit surface behind the complex and of course on Power Park. The players showed great enthusiasm and commitment throughout the year, and indeed it was a pleasure to be involved with such a dedicated group of lads. This desire and commitment was evident in our first championship match when we travelled to Dublin to take on Coláiste Eoin. St. Peter’s won this match on a scoreline of 2-16 to 2-6. Perhaps we should have won by more as we were quite waseful in the second half. Four excellent points from Colm Heffernan put Peter’s into an early lead and this was quickly followed by a great goal from Donal Shanely. Peter’s were always in control and deservedly won this game. Team: Luke White, Pádraig Foley, Cormac O’ Rourke, Seán Doyle, Bill Eviston, Andrew Butler, James Cash, Donal Shanely, Conor Devereux, Tomás O’Brien, Murt Joyce, Colm Heffernan, Kevin O’ Connor, Ben O’ Brien, Andrew Kenny Subs: Tom Dixon for M. Joyce, Adrian Ryan for K. O’ Connor, Cian Neville for D. Shanely. |

Having defeated Good Counsel College in the semi final on a scoreline of 1-18 to 2-6, St Peter's will be determined to bring back the Fr. Cosgrave Cup to Summerhill, having done so in 2008. | 2nd Round of Junior Hurling Championship
RESULT: St. Peter's College 3 - 22 Birr Community School 0 - 7 Venue: Dicksboro, Kilkenny Date:Monday 27th Sept, 2010 After a successful beginning to the campaign last week, this victory now leaves St. Peter's with a fantastic chance of topping the group and reaching a Leinster Semi Final. The score line doesn't really reflect how tough this match actually was, and Birr will undoubtedly feel that they were unlucky not to take some excellent goal chances early in the game. Again, St. Peter's began brightly and an Andrew Kenny goal at the stroke of half time was a real blow to Birr, who looked dangerous from the off. Indeed the full back line was under considerable pressure throughout the first half but managed to stand firm, especiallySeán Doyle at full back. Some outstanding scores in the second half assured us of victory, with Colm Heffernan and Andrew Kenny scoring fine points. The next game is against Kilkenny CBS next Monday 4th Oct in Power Park. |

| JUNIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP 1st ROUND GAME (20th Sept) | ||
Date : 20/9/10 Venue: Silver Park, Stilorgan, Dublin Result: S.P.C 2-16 Coláiste Eoin 2-6 St. Peter's got off to a great start in this year's Junior Hurling Championship with this comprehensive victory over Coláiste Eoin, Átha Cliath. The match was played in ideal conditions at Silver Park, Stilorgan. With so much work being put into underage hurling in Dublin, we were expecting a difficult match. Playing with a breeze in the first half, Peter's raced into an early lead with four excellent points from Colm Heffernanand a wonderful goal from Donal Shanely. However in the second half we were quite wasteful missing some glorious opportunities. With a challenge game this Thursday against Blackwater Community School, Cork, we will be hoping to improve. Team: Luke White, Pádraig Foley, Cormac O' Rourke, Seán Doyle, Bill Eviston, Andrew Butler, James Cash, Donal Shanely, Conor Devereux, Mossy O' Brien, Murt Joyce, Colm Heffernan, Kevin O' Connor, Ben O' Brien, Andrew Kenny. Subs: T. Dixon for Murt Joyce. Adrian Ryan for Kevin O' Connor Cian Neville for Donal Shanely |

It was a closely contested game all through with St. Peter’s just ahead at the break 1-5 to 2-1. A good goal by Rowan White after a neat pass by Cian Kelly midway through the second half put St. Peter’s five points up. Jake Firman who was having a fine game had to retire with a hamstring injury, with twelve mins to go and from then to the end Good Counsel piled on the pressure. They added a goal and a point, but resolute defending secured the win for St. Peter’s. |

| Leinster Semi-final | ||
The Juvenile Hurlers were defeated at the Leinster Semi-final stage against Dublin North on a scoreline of 5-17 to 1-5. Indeed it has become an impossible task to compete with combined schools. Although Dublin Hurling seems to be in a very healthy situation at underage level, heavy defeats such as this does nothing to promote hurling in single schools. St. Peter's, having defeated Castlecomer CBS, Enniscorthy CBS and Birr Community School to reach this stage tried their best throughout and could not be faulted for effort. It's about time the Leinster Council put an end to these combined schools competing in what is supposed to be a single school competition, where it now looks like Dublin North will face Dublin South in the final. Nevertheless, the lads still have the Flo Gas league to look forward to, and hopefully we will bring back some silverware by the end of the year. |
