We have competed in a variety of events so far this year. Ronan Finn and Oisin Coffey (both LC1) took part in the inaugural “mock debate” in NUI, Maynooth. LC2 students David Atkinson, Eoghan Fitzgerald and Stephen Coleman got to the County Final of the Mental Health Public Project which aims to promote positive mental health for all.
Our Junior cycle students have been busy also. Fintan O’Connor (3G) and Niall O’Donnagain travelled to Belvedere to compete in Mace Debates in September. 2nd Years Gareth Jones and Ryan O’Donnell also competed in Mace Debates in Dublin – St. Mary’s in Rathmines.
Finally, students from 1st to 3rd Year debate weekly (on topics ranging from Nuclear Energy to Santa Claus!) in St. Peter’s College Junior Debating Club. |

Mark Walden at The Wexford County Public Library
|
On, Thursday the 5th of November the students of 1 German attended a talk by the author, Mark Walden at The Wexford County Public Library. The students left school at 1:25 sharp and arrived at 1:45 sharp. Mark studied at Newcastle University, where he received a BA in English literature and an MA in the twentieth century literature, film and television. It was here that he met his wife, Sarah. Mark’s first book H.I.V.E won the confident readers 9+ category in the Richard and Judy’s children book club in 2007. After spending ten years in the video game industry, Mark left his post out of a desire to begin his career as a writer. The unlikely inspiration behind the top-secret school of villainy was, in fact, a Persian blue cat named Otto. On noticing Otto’s uncanny resemblance to the cat that Blofeld owned in the James Bond films, Mark began to wonder exactly how the world’s evil genius’s honed their skills and where the nefarious villains of tomorrow were trained..... And so H.I.V.E was born.
Mark began his talk by trying to persuade the students that villains weren’t the evil characters they were made out to be. This was the sole reason Mark wrote H.I.V.E. Mark followed this up by reading a short extract from the third novel in the series, Escape Velocity, describing a vicious car chase. Mark has now written and published four books about H.I.V.E, with a fifth due in May.
The books are based around the life of 13 year old Otto Mulpense. Otto has been chosen as a member of H.I.V.E. Otto quickly befriends Wing, Laura and Shelby. Students are selected (kidnapped) for H.I.V.E because of their evident villainous talents. Students attend H.I.V.E for six years to become the future of villainy.
WE were totally captivated by Mark’s talk. We asked many questions and showed great interest in the novels. We would like to personally like to thank Mark Walden, the staff of Wexford County Public Library and lastly Mr. Cassidy for such a great experience.
By Fintan O’ Connor, Cian Kelly, Luke McDonald, Brendan Morris & Matthew Murphy. Class of 1 German.

The Writer’s Club
|
The Writer’s Club is a group dedicated to helping first years and second years to improve their skills as writers, run by seniors, namely David Atkinson (TY1), Stephen Coleman and Ian Mitchell (TY2), and David Mahon and Shane O’Reilly (LC2). Objectives: 1. To encourage writing amongst the students, particularly 1st and 2nd years 2. To improve writing skills 3. To encourage going beyond one’s normal comfort zones, for instance into different styles and genres of writing of both prose and poetry 4. To try and expand into new areas, e.g. drawing of cartoons 5. Finally we hope to bring together the year’s works and publish a magazine akin to last year’s “Write Away”, using the best works of students of all ages who wish to contribute.

It Takes Skill
|
Vespum and Besad glared at each other from either side of the battlefield, both dressed and armed differently, both ready for battle. Vespum was a warrior, dressed in a casual tunic (he wouldn’t need a full suit of armour) and he held a one-handed sword: a gladius named “Plagatus” in his right hand.
