Team Andy McGrath, captain, Darragh Kehoe, Conor O'Keefe, Neal Rossiter. St Peter's had to play in a round robin tournament to qualify for the semi-final, playing Mercy, Kilbeggan, and Kilkenny College . The games were hard fought but the score six-nil in both didn't reflect the battle. St Colmkilles of Knocklyon, Dublin were the semi-final opponents and the level of difficulty increased substantually. Five games to one was the result but some of the games could have gone either way. Terenure College was the opposition in the final and what a final. Andy played the first match and it went all the way to the final ace, losing 29 to 30. Darragh, playing at number two, was up next and another game down to the wire, winning 30 to 29. Two games played, the score, one game all. Next up for the college was Conor who lost narrowly 27 to 30 after some very unsportsman-like behavior from his opponent. Last up in the singles was Neal who had an outstanding victory at 30 to 19. Tied match at two games all. Peters had the advantage of eight points going into the doubles matches. Andy and Conor played very steady badminton in their match and had a great win, 30 to 23. This added to the Peter's advantage taking it to 15 points. All eyes were on the last doubles of Darragh and Neal, which was running simultaneously, the boys lost 30 to 20 but they had done enough to guarantee victory for St. Peter's by five points. It took some time to do the math before the boys began to realise that they had won the Leinster Championship. Well done boys. |
