ADMISSIONS TO ST. PETER'S COLLEGE - INTRODUCTION:

Admissions Policy:

admissions to st peters college co wexfordThis policy is set out in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, 1998, Section 1.5, 2(d) and the Education Welfare Act, 2000, Section 19. 1.

In so doing, the Board of Management trusts that Parents/Guardians will be assisted in relation to admission matters. Furthermore, the school Principal will be happy to clarify any matters arising from this policy. It is to be clearly understood that the school depends on the grants and teacher resources provided by the DES and that it operates within the regulations laid down from time to time by the DES. All school policies must have regard to the resources and funding thereby made available. Within this context and set of parameters, the school supports the principles of:

  • Inclusiveness, particularly with reference to the admission of children with a disability or other Special Educational Need

  • Equality of access to and participation in the school

  • Parental choice in relation to admission.

  • Respect for the diversity of values, beliefs, traditions, languages and ways of life in society

PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION INTO 1ST YEAR

  1. 1.   Application Forms are available from the School Office during normal school hours, downloaded from the website, OR may be posted out to Parent/Guardian on request.

    2.    The school accepts Application Forms in respect of boys only on and from the time they enter 1st Class in national school.

  2. 3.    Prospective students must be a minimum of 12 years of age by 1st January in the Calendar Year following the student’s entry into First Year in Secondary school.

  3. 4.    Applications are accepted on a first come – first served basis, subject to criteria set out on page Two.

  4. 5.    The completed Application Form is filed under the proposed year of Enrolment in order of date received.

  5. 6.   The school will acknowledge receipt of the Application Form by returning a copy of same to Parent/Guardian, stamped with the receipt date. If the Parent/Guardian does not receive the receipted copy back within 7 days of Application, the onus is on the Parent/Guardian to contact the school.

  6. 7.    It is the responsibility of the Parent/Guardian to notify the school, in writing, of any changes in the details contained on the Application Form including change of address.
  7. 8.    In November/December preceding the students year of entry, the school will contact Parent/ Guardian, in writing, asking for confirmation of their application for the following September - by completing a more detailed information questionnaire and asking for payment of a non-refundable deposit.

  8. 9.    Parent/Guardian are afforded 14 days in which to confirm /
  9. reject and/or notify the school of any changes.

  10. 10.    Confirmation of a place is conditional on – Receipt of completed Application Form Receipt of non-refundable deposit Signed Acceptance by the Parent/Guardian & Student of the School Rules Receipt of full information regarding any Medical condition and/or Special Educational Needs of student

    Failure to disclose full information regarding any medical condition or special needs may result in loss of place. (See sections on Student Medical Condition and Special Educational Needs)

  11. 11.    Should the demand for 1st Year places exceed availability, the Secretary of BOM will notify, in writing, the Parent/Guardian of boys to whom it is not possible to offer a place. Such boys will be placed on a Waiting list in accordance with the date and time order of receipt of the original Application Form.

  12. 12.   Parents/Guardians have the right to appeal this decision to the BOM. Such an appeal must be made in writing within 14 days of the date of the letter informing them that they were not offered a place, and is only admissible if it relates to the procedures involved in the implementation of the Admission Policy. Parents/Guardians must state in their written appeal if they wish to have a personal hearing at any Board meeting called for the purpose of considering such appeals.

  13. 13.    A decision not to enroll a boy into the school may be appealed within 42 days of receipt of the BOM’s decision under either point 11 or point 12 of the above to the DES under the terms of Section 29 of the Education Act, 1998 (telephone: 090-6483600 / 6484267, web: www.education.ie)

  14. In mid-January the school will advise Parents/Guardians in writing of “Information Night” which is usually held at end of January.

  15. Parent/Guardian are notified during the first week of July of their son’s Class Allocation. They also receive a Book List relevant to the Class allocated and notification of commencement date in September.

CRITERIA FOR OFFERING PLACES IN 1ST YEAR

st peters college Co Wexford IrelandAs already stated the school accepts application forms in respect of boys from the time they reach First Class in National School.

Completed application forms are filed in order of “Date of Receipt” under the proposed year of entry.

The Board of Management will decide on a year-to-year basis, the number of places that will be offered in First Year.

Where the demand for places exceeds the number of places available the following criteria, adopted by the Board of Management, will be used to allocate places.

Priority will be given to the following categories of students:

  1. 1.   Brothers of students past or present who attended the school

    2.   Sons of Past Pupils

  2. 3.   Sons of Staff members

  3. 4.   Sons of Members of the Board of Management

    For all other applicants:
    5.    Date order of receipt of fully completed Application Form.

PROCEDURE FOR STUDENTS TRANSFERRING FROM OTHER SECOND LEVEL SCHOOLS

The school will consider applications from students who wish to transfer from other schools subject to the following:

  1. 1.   Availability of places in the school

  2. 2.   Availability and suitability of places in specific subjects

  3. 3.   Consideration of Health, Safety and Educational Welfare of current students in the school

  4. 4.   The school being satisfied that the transfer is in the best interests of the student.

Requests to transfer a student from another Second Level school to St. Peter’s College, Wexford must be made in writing by a Parent/Guardian to the Principal and enclosing copies of the student’s last three School Reports, a letter of recommendation from the Principal of his present school and his P.P.S. Number

  • A.   On receipt of this information, the Principal shall arrange to meet the student and Parent/Guardian at the earliest opportunity

  • B.   The Principal will also make contact with the Principal of the student’s present school to fully discuss the application to transfer

  • C.   Within 15 school days of the meeting, the Principal will make a decision in relation to the application. This decision will be mindful of overall Board of Management policy, availability of places, Department of Education & Science approval (if necessary), the opinion of the student’s present school and the specific needs of the student his Parent/Guardian particularly in relation to the availability of places, his subjects choices and timing of his transfer. The Principal’s decision will be conveyed, in writing, to the student’s Parent/Guardian and the student’s present school. The Principal’s decision will be subject to the formal approval of the Board of Management

  • D.   Confirmation of a place is conditional on the receipt by the school of the signed acceptance by the Parent/Guardian and student of the School Rules and Anti- Bullying Policy that will be sent by post with the offer of a place. The offer is also conditional on receipt by the school of a full statement of any medical condition and/or Special Educational Needs

  • E.   The Board of Management reserve the right to refuse an application for admission subject to the school’s Admission Policy

STUDENT MEDICAL CONDITIONS

The school will require the following information in relation to any medical condition of incoming students:

  1. 1.   Name of condition

  2. 2.   Symptoms

  3. 3.   Clearly defined areas of risk

  4. 4.   Known circumstances that triggers the condition

  5. 5.   Prognosis

  6. 6.   Details of support provided in National School

  7. 7.   Emergency Telephone Numbers

  8. 8.   Name and Telephone Number of General Practitioner and Hospital usually attended.

  9. 9.   A signed declaration that the school is not taking on the liability of dealing with a medical condition for which it is not properly equipped.

  10. 10.   The school has no obligation to administer medication and accepts no responsibility for ensuring that medication is taken.

  11. 11.   The school is entitled to rely on the student to carry the required medication and to carry out the required medical procedure.

  12. 12.   The school must inform its Insurance Company when admitting students with serious medical conditions. The teaching and non-teaching staff will also be informed of a student’s medical Condition on a confidential basis.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS

In the case of an incoming student with Special Educational Needs, it is open to the Principal And/or Board of Management to request a copy of the student’s medical and/or Psychological Report or, where such is not available, to request Parent(s)/Guardian(s) to have the student assessed professionally immediately.

The purpose of this assessment report is to assist the school in establishing the educational and training needs of the student relevant to his specific disability or special needs and to profile the support services required. Following receipt of this report, the Principal and/or Board of Management will assess how the school can meet the needs specified therein.

The Principal will meet the student and his Parents/Guardians to discuss his needs more fully and how the school may best cater for those needs.

These resources might include the following: Resource Teacher for Special Needs Special Needs Assistant Specialised Equipment or Furniture Special Transport Services

The Board of Management reserves the right to refuse an application for Admission subject to the School’s Admission Policy.
